It's great that we can recite what we have read, but how can you convince me and yourself that what you have read is true? Buddha taught us to investigate diligently to find the truth. How much evident do you have that a seed from past life can grow into a tree in this life. You can ask me why did something happen, and I can tell you the cause of why it happen. The cause and effect that a Buddhist believe is not that simple. For example, falling asleep behind the wheel is not the cause of an accident, but because you did something wrong in the past. How can you prove such a thing. That aspect of Buddhism is what I think that is similiar to fortune telling. Why did he fall asleep that day, that hour, that minutes, and with his family.
