After reading various entries, I would like to add my 2 cents of contribution.
As the saying goes “all roads lead to Rome”. All different sects of Buddhism lead to one goal, that is to free oneself from the rebirth cycle. Buddha provides many different methods for people to reach that because there are many different types of people on earth. For example, Theravada is suitable for hot climate such as Thai, Laos, and South Vietnam. Under Theravada sect, the monks walk into the street daily for food offering to reach out to the Lay people, to spread the seed of Buddhism. The act of giving to the monk would to appeal to the individual’s needs to learn of Buddhism. Mahayana is suitable for cold climate such as Tibet, China, and North Vietnam. Under Mahayana sect, the monks remain at the temple or house for the lay people to come and explore the teaching of Buddhism.
Each sect of Buddhism has it’s good and bad point. The good and bad are relative to our own set of values and believes. In general, if the bad out weight the good, then that sect will not prosper.
