I think you're a little confused about the vows of Amitabha. According to the Pure Land School, "Amitabha achieved Buddhahood on the express condition that he could receive at death all who sincerely call upon his name and carry them to his Western Paradise, where they might pursue the quest for ultimate perfection under far happier auspices than when surrounded by the conditions of earthly existence" (Burtt 182). This is the Boddisattva ideal in Mahayana Buddihsm.
